IFR Arrival Route: Standard Terminal Arrival Route (STAR)

ATC-Coded IFR Arrival Route

Established for Arriving IFR Aircraft

A STAR is an ATC coded IFR arrival route established for use by arriving IFR aircraft destined for specific airports. These routes are designed to provide a safe and efficient means for aircraft to transition from en route operations to the terminal area. STARs are published in the Airport/Facility Directory (AFD) and are typically depicted on terminal area charts.

To fly a STAR, pilots must obtain clearance from ATC and comply with the published procedures. ATC will provide vectors to the pilot to guide them along the route. STARs often include holding fixes where pilots may be required to hold until further clearance is received.
